CURRENT OCCUPATION
Director of Pharmacy

WHY WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN FAIR STATE’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS?
Since my first visit, I have loved Fair State’s inclusivity, allowing for a strong sense of community to both long time members and first time visitors in the taproom. While there is no shortage of breweries, there is a shortage of places someone can feel free to be themselves. It’s for this reason being on the Board of Directors would be an honor to contribute to the direction of Fair State and continue this tradition… not to mention it’s the best beer in the state.

THE BOARD LEADS AROUND FOUR STRATEGIC PILLARS: FINANCIAL HEALTH, SUSTAINABLE GROWTH, MEMBERSHIP AND ENGAGEMENT, AND IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY. PLEASE PICK ONE OF THE FOUR PILLARS AND PRESENT AN OPPORTUNITY FOR GROWTH OR IMPROVEMENT YOU SEE WITHIN THE COOPERATIVE.
While all strategic pillars are important to maintaining a healthy, sustainable business, the pillar I would like to touch on most is the impact on the community. As a proud Nordeaster (Windom Park Neighborhood) I live directly in the community that Fair State sits within. I think there’s an opportunity for neighbors to see Fair State as encouraging people to come to the neighborhood for the wrong reasons, but there’s an opportunity for members to give back to the surrounding community and neighborhood associations and show the positive impact of having this beer community within our neighborhood. We could expand the mutual aid efforts, have garbage pickup days, or find out what neighborhood associations need and partner to provide them with those items in Fair State’s name. Also, by interacting with local neighborhood associations, we can understand their perceived impact and on solutions if that impact is found to be negative.

EXPERIENCE WITH COOPERATES AND/OR BOARD SERVICE
My only experience serving on a board is serving on the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy Board of Governors for the last seven years. My duties to this board are to review the curriculum with the Dean to ensure students are learning the most relevant material to practice and make suggestions for improvement, volunteer time to help with college initiatives, mentor students, and help with philanthropy.

INVOLVEMENT WITH BEER, ALCOHOL, SERVICE, AND/OR CANNABIS INDUSTRIES
While I have no experience directly with the beer/alcohol/cannabis industry other than being a customer, I was previously a barista and know the complications of working in the service industry well. As a pharmacist and someone who managed a pharmacy for many years, I understand complications that come with poor service and how to manage customer expectations. From this experience in addition to my current role as Director of Pharmacy for a nonprofit organization, I have a deep appreciation and understanding of laws, regulations, and audits due to the heavy regulations on pharmacies.

EXPERIENCE WITH ORGANIZATIONAL LONG-TERM PLANNING
Keeping an understanding of market trends and impact on current business, learning to pivot to meet customer experience expectations and establish new norms, and operationalizing new innovative technologies are all at the core of my current job.

HOW DO YOU APPLY DEI (DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION) IN YOUR WORK AND/OR PERSONAL LIFE?
The concepts of DEI are core to my belief system. Understanding each individual is unique based on lived experience and should be treated as a sum of one person I’ve met, not a part of a group. I’ve taken DEI courses through work (MHealth Fairview) and completed two YMCA DEI courses offered with a diverse group of friends.

HOW WOULD YOU WORK TOWARDS INCREASED INCLUSION AS A BOARD MEMBER?
This is the toughest question on this survey. I think Fair State currently does a great job with inclusion by creating a welcoming environment for all. I think a continued effort to show diversity in staff creates a more inclusive atmosphere, so a way to show increased inclusion is to ensure we’re reaching all communities with employment opportunities.

ANYTHING ELSE?
While being a pharmacist, and especially a director of pharmacy, isn’t the most interesting sounding job, I have a lot of hobbies. I enjoy film photography, cooking, gardening, and have a true love for animals. I have a golden retriever and two cats that are my everything. I appreciate the time you’ve spent reading through this application and considering me for the position!

JAMES COLEMAN HITT (HE/HIM)

CURRENT OCCUPATION
Technical Parts Representative

WHY WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN FAIR STATE’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS?
I have been a member of Fair State for 8 years, and I feel that this place has provided a valuable and positive asset to Central Ave and Northeast (NE) Minneapolis. I have met many friends at Fair State since becoming a member, and I feel the community atmosphere that has been cultivated. As a long term NE resident who’s seen the area grow and evolve, I want to participate and help in the growth and sustainability of a place that is vital to the area.

“Impact on the community” is the pillar that I want to add value to. An idea that I have is a member “pickup” day where we go out in the area and remove litter from the community, then go back to Fair State for some well deserved beer and Heggie’s pizza. I believe that it is important for Fair State to give back to the community, and I would provide ideas on how to engage members and also help out the Northeast neighborhoods.

EXPERIENCE WITH COOPERATES AND/OR BOARD SERVICE
My wife and I are members of Eastside Co-op, and to be honest, that is the extent of my experience with cooperatives. However, though I do not have previous experience with board service and cooperatives outside of Eastside Co-op, I am open and eager to learn how to be a productive member of the board.

INVOLVEMENT WITH BEER, ALCOHOL, SERVICE, AND/OR CANNABIS INDUSTRIES
I have consumed and am well-versed in beer, alcohol, and cannabis. Although, I have never worked in the service industry, I have had many customer facing jobs and I understand the importance/impact those positions have on the overall experience of the establishment.

EXPERIENCE WITH ORGANIZATIONAL LONG-TERM PLANNING
I have worked at a small business in a management position creating seasonal business plans. I do have experience with organizational planning, although not long term. Personally, I am a long term planner, and I am waiting for the opportunity to provide my insight and perspective on how to help an organization plan for the future.

HOW DO YOU APPLY DEI (DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION) IN YOUR WORK AND/OR PERSONAL LIFE?
While I’ve had no specific DEI training, I’ve had sexual harassment focused training. I have always found that diversity in any organization is an essential asset that can’t be understated. There will never be one person that can provide the perspective needed to understand the needs of all. I find it important to have a group, or in this case, a Board, that has members with a diverse mindset to make changes for the good of DEI.

HOW WOULD YOU WORK TOWARDS INCREASED INCLUSION AS A BOARD MEMBER?
I will bring new and innovative ideas to the Board, especially on community engagement to the overall community footprint of Fair State. We have the potential to increase significantly within NE Minneapolis and beyond. The more people that know what Fair State is about through our acts of community service, the better the impact we can have.

ANYTHING ELSE?
I am a passionate individual who cares about spaces where people from every walk of life can feel welcomed and included. I have been a member of Fair State since 2015, and I enjoy spending my time here. I want all to see how special this place is, and how we can continue to build an atmosphere of community.

CLEMON DABNEY (HE/HIM)

CURRENT OCCUPATION
Chief Science Officer

WHY WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN FAIR STATE’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS?
I would like to join Fair State’s Board of Directors because I think I can bring a unique viewpoint and set of skills to help build upon the cooperatives initiatives in the cannabis industry as well as Fair State’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The strategic pillar that I can contribute to is the impact on the community. I have a PhD in Cannabis molecular genetics and genomics. I think an opportunity for growth and improvement that I can contribute is to educate our community on the benefits of the diverse hemp-derived cannabinoids and terpenes as well as production, processing, and value-added product manufacturing. With my background in cannabis science I can help Fair State communicate to the community about the various cannabis beverages.

EXPERIENCE WITH COOPERATES AND/OR BOARD SERVICE
During my Masters of Science, I served as a CFANS Student Board Representative, representing the Horticulture Club. I would bring news about what our club was doing to a larger stage, as well as inform the Horticulture Club on events or news related to CFANS. I also served on the Finance committee which discussed the financial state of the CFANS Student Board as well as reviewed grants and determined which applications deserved funding. I also served as the Executive Vice President of the Council of Graduate Students. While serving as the Executive Vice President for COGS, I worked on issues ranging from personal safety, student service fees, and the achievement gap. In this position I engaged with graduate students and relayed their cares and concerns to the appropriate people. I was able to meet powerful people such as President Kahler and Danita Brown the Vice Provost and Dean of Student Life and bring initiatives and policy changes that addressed graduate student concerns and interests.

INVOLVEMENT WITH BEER, ALCOHOL, SERVICE, AND/OR CANNABIS INDUSTRIES
I earned a PhD from the College of Biological Sciences at the University of Minnesota and studied Cannabis molecular genetics and genomics. Since 2017 I have leased land and farmed hemp in Scandia, MN. I run a company known as Doctor Dabs which won Most Innovative THC Product for my THC maple candies at the 2022 Legacy CBD & THC Cup. I have worked as a Chief Science Officer at Superior Molecular and currently work as the Chief Science Officer for Uniflora Holistics which owns and operates Retro Bakery, an edibles manufacturing company, and Love is an Ingredient, a chain of retail stores. While at Superior Molecular I optimized water soluble cannabinoids which are used to make cannabis beverages and I created new hemp-derived products. Currently at Uniflora Holistics I develop, research, and scale new hemp-derived edibles for Retro Bakery.

EXPERIENCE WITH ORGANIZATIONAL LONG-TERM PLANNING
I have experience during my MS and PhD developing self-guided research projects, training technicians on research protocols, collecting data, analyzing data, collaborating with other scientists, communicating the results in person at poster sessions, oral presentations at relevant conferences, and publishing scientific papers in relevant journals. This work require long term planning because it can take up to several years to accomplish turning an idea into a published paper. I also have experience with organizational long-term planning in my role as CSO. The creation of new products is a long term process. One needs to survey customers about products they would purchase. Then I researched ingredient providers and documented formulation trials to create a product that is reproducible, has the desired cannabinoid potency between batches and to make the best quality, reliable, and scalable product. After these steps I worked on creating enterprise budgets to communicate cost of production and profit to the CEO and CFO. I would finally work with designers to communicate and educate the consumer on the uniqueness, benefits, as well as how to use the product on labels and handouts.

HOW DO YOU APPLY DEI (DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION) IN YOUR WORK AND/OR PERSONAL LIFE?
As the owner of Doctor Dabs I decided to pay all my employees a livable wage of at least $25 per hour. I also apply DEI in my role by employing recruiting practice that focus on hiring BIPOC and women. Currently all of my employees are either people of color or women.

HOW WOULD YOU WORK TOWARDS INCREASED INCLUSION AS A BOARD MEMBER?
I have worked toward increasing access and inclusion in my educational career by opening my lectures with women scientists that made significant contributions to science such as Rosalind Franklin, who discovered DNAs double helix structure and had her work stolen by Watson and Crick. I consistently use my positions of power to educate, organize, and communicate in ways that focus on DEI.

ANYTHING ELSE?
I have extensive experience in hemp production, processing, and value-added product creation. I have a track record of service and have a focus on communicating science, collaborating with people from diverse backgrounds to accomplish long term projects, and employ strategies to insure my actions and work focus on DEI.

WHY WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN FAIR STATE’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS?
Fair State is a place where joy can be met with change making and brewing. Fair State is a place where sharing a beer can be an experience to commiserate, learn, explore, or grow.

Over the past three years of board service, I have lived out my values and contributed to a growing organization that I deeply care about. The work of the board has been both challenging and invigorating. We got to welcome a newly unionized workforce at my first meeting. Over the past three years, we managed a can shortage, a global pandemic, showed up for our community during the racial awakening, and we created another brand to help us grow: Chill State. Through my involvement with Fair State, I have had the opportunity to see how my leadership can intertwine with a community of care and social responsibility. Over the past three years, we have honed in and defined where we want to focus as a board and where we want to support the overall organization growth. I still view this work as exciting and would like to continue to contribute to it as a board member.

I have the time and the personal space to put in the work the board needs and I am familiar with what strong board leadership requires. I have the skills to train and support and bring in wealth or financial resources to the board. Finally, I trust in the wisdom and knowledge of the brewers and the leadership of Fair State that together we can make informed and fruitful decisions. I view board leadership as a place to model transparency, provide needed support the CEO, and continue to move resources and give.

Impact on the Community: As a member, I see an opportunity to align strong financial health and community impact as Chill State Collective (our THC products) grows. While we need to strategically invest in this new market to grow revenue and shares, I also think we have an opportunity as a collective to influence local policy and how we prioritize partners in the cannabis industry.

While both black and white folks use marijuana at similar rates, black people historically have been disproportionately charged and convicted at higher rates than their white counterparts with cannabis-related crimes. With the impending legalization of cannabis in Minnesota and the legislature’s proposal to automatically expunge low-level cannabis crime, some of this reckoning with an unjust system is coming. As a business and community, we will likely profit on this new market because of the growth potential and the quality of our product. As an organization that also centers how we care for one another, this revenue and place in the market should also be a space where we center those most impacted by the previous harms of the lack of regulation. Our power of influence sits within the craft beer market and growing partnership in the cannabis industry and a superior product. That power, coupled with our strong reputation, is where we should push for better policy and reinvestment into communities that have been harmed by outdated and racist policies relating to cannabis in Minnesota.

We have an opportunity to continue to select and prioritize black-led and black-owned business and folks who have been disproportionately impacted. We also have an opportunity to take portions of the revenue from Chill State and invest it the communities that have been harmed. Just as our Cooperates program selects quarterly partners and share taproom sales, we have a chance to rethink how we reinvest into our community to make it better for all of us.

EXPERIENCE WITH COOPERATES AND/OR BOARD SERVICE
I have served on the Fair State Board since 2020. During my time on the board I have served as the Vice Chair and Chair of the board. Before serving on the Fair State Board, I have experience serving on the Nellie Stone Johnson Scholarship Board (3 years) and as a volunteer on the Headwaters Foundation for Justice development committee.

INVOLVEMENT WITH BEER, ALCOHOL, SERVICE, AND/OR CANNABIS INDUSTRIES
I have served on the Fair State Board since 2020 and have provided guidance to the CEO, as part of the board, with the expansion for Fair State’s new cannabis venture: Chill State.

EXPERIENCE WITH ORGANIZATIONAL LONG-TERM PLANNING
In my previous role, I lead the Strategic Planning at a small nonprofit (less than $3M annually). This process included gathering alumni, students, and partners involved in our work for listening sessions; sharing information across groups; and condensing information from the past outcomes towards a new strategic plan. This plan expanded from a three-year outlook to a five-year plan.

As a Fair State Board member, I introduced the idea of creating more strategic pillars for the board to guide our work. Collectively, the board decided on the key areas we should provide a high-level focus along with which business areas would report up to the four focus areas.

Along with my previous strategic planning, I have worked as a grant writer for the last seven years, which has included talking to multiple parties involved to create budgets, overall program scope, and plan for both short and long-term funding/program evolution.

HOW DO YOU APPLY DEI (DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION) IN YOUR WORK AND/OR PERSONAL LIFE?
In both my personal and professional life, I know that DEI work and aligned actions reflects how we fully care for one another. When we center this work, we are actively restructuring our systems, ideas, and beliefs to be more holistic. I personally feel committed to this work because I believe when we effectively dismantle these connected oppressive or harmful systems, each of us has an opportunity to live a more free and creative life.

I apply this work in a few ways. First, I am a lifelong learner and a curious person. My community is made of people who believe in ongoing accountability and call-ins. Over the course of my life and my learning, I have gained a deeper understanding of my personal biases, the structural and social institutions that oppress us. This work has been done both as an individual and through community. Over time, it has included being organized through a race and class training/cohort model at the Headwaters Foundation for Justice; living in a post-Apartheid country as a Peace Corps Volunteer; and serving as the Diversity Committee Co-Chair at a large human service non-profit; a year-long Equity Works Leadership Institute Training at the University of Minnesota, and through reading and podcasts. As a board member, I have also pushed for a more direct look at when or where sexism or racism show up in our policies or practices as a collective.

Additionally, I think growth for all of us includes keeping an open-mind, creating an atmosphere where we can grow together, meet people where they are at to ask for more learning/reflection, and provide accountability where people are called in on harmful behavior. Both personally and professionally, the internal work or understanding must also match in the actions we take, the polices we change or add, and what values we consider as we make decisions.

HOW WOULD YOU WORK TOWARDS INCREASED INCLUSION AS A BOARD MEMBER?
As an organization in an industry that is led and shaped mostly by white men, I think we have room to grow as an organization, along with the industry. For years, Fair State has had a community reputation of treating staff well. We’re the first unionized microbrewery in the US and this move by staff was immediately supported by the leadership. As members, we know how cared for we feel when we pull up at the bar or grab a space in the beer garden. This level of community and the reputation that proceeds us calls for a board that is responsive to all of our communities (members, leadership, union, Northeast community, and Minnesota) and the changing times. In the past two years as board chair, I have led through encouraging us to be an excellent example of how to do it well, not because we have to, but because we can. We don’t have to be right on the first try and we aren’t seeking perfection, but the standards to which we hold ourselves need to be high. This encouraged excellence is core to how I see our board growing to be more inclusive and welcoming so it can be a place for all people to serve. I also believe we have both the internal smarts and hearts to do just that while we lead by example.

For the board, this means more training around issues like structural racism, sexism, and how the -isms our society has created show up in our governing, meetings, and structures. As a board member, I would continue to encourage conversations where we don’t know all the answers, but we work together to seek them. I would continue to encourage vulnerable and honest conversations so we can assess where we are and where need to grow. Additionally, we need to finish our internal policy review with the help of the HR consultant. We need to make sure our board policies match where we organizationally are today. Additional training and a revamp of how we onboard board members is all in the works.

We have seen other breweries fail people in their community when they let unchecked behavior fly. I don’t think we have unchecked behavior at Fair State like that we’ve seen throughout parts of the brewing community. Rather, we have an opportunity to lean into a better understanding of ourselves, so we can continue to be an example of excellence within the brewing community and our collective community.

ANYTHING ELSE?
I have deeply loved serving on the board for the last three years. It has been a time of challenge and growth. As we move forward, I am excited to see the seeds of our growth blooms—whether or not I have the opportunity to continue my service.

I will be out of town on April 11th and will miss the get-to-know-the-candidates event. However, if you have more questions about my previous leadership or where I see us going, please let me know! Drop me a line or let’s grab a beer. Cheers!

KYLE GOERTZ (HE/HIM)

CURRENT OCCUPATION
MN GreenCorps Member at Get the Lead Out

WHY WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN FAIR STATE’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS?
I am applying for a position on the Board of Directors because I want to be a more active member of Fair State Brewing Cooperative’s community as it continues to grow and develop. I have gained a lot of experience leading people, coordinating with various groups to accomplish a common goal, and analyzing the strengths and opportunities businesses have throughout my professional career; all of which I feel helps me bring value as a Board Member. Additionally, my years as a bartender gave me a look at the good and bad sides of the beer and alcohol industry. I want to help build up the good parts and partner with the Fair State community to acknowledge and improve the bad parts.

Fair State is seen as a leader in the community for being inclusive in an industry that can often feel exclusive. I would like to contribute to building on the example the Cooperative has set.

Impact on the Community: I’d like to see Fair State be a more vocal advocate for public transit and the prioritization of walkers/rollers/bikers for both environmental and economic reasons. The neighborhood at Central and Lowry is one of the best in the city with tons of great businesses. It should be more than a destination for folks nearby in Northeast. It should be a place for people from all over to spend an afternoon or evening without having to drive and park a car. The upcoming changes to Lowry will (hopefully) help, but that’s still years away and Central can be a loud and intimidating road to be around. In the mean time it’d be great to find a way for Fair State to promote taking the bus or biking or walking to the brewery and neighborhood with themed nights or promotions.

EXPERIENCE WITH COOPERATES AND/OR BOARD SERVICE
Aside from being a member at Fair State, Eastside Co-op and REI co-op, I have no experience with cooperatives or board service.

INVOLVEMENT WITH BEER, ALCOHOL, SERVICE, AND/OR CANNABIS INDUSTRIES
I was a bartender for ~5 years at Burrito Loco in Dinkytown. It was a great job and experience that built some of the best friendships I have to this day. I also was a part time member of the street team for Castle Danger; mostly working at festivals and tastings.

EXPERIENCE WITH ORGANIZATIONAL LONG-TERM PLANNING
In my previous role at Ameriprise working with small businesses/franchisees I was involved in the annual goal setting and planning for our department of 20 people. We’d review how we measured up the previous year from a results standpoint and an employee development standpoint; where’d we excel, where’d we fall short, what did we want to continue, what needed to change. Then we’d look at what we wanted to accomplish for the coming year and determine and make a plan to get there. My role in these discussions wasn’t always about coming up with the next big idea, rather I was a person that knew how to translate big ideas in to reality in a practical and implementable manner.

HOW DO YOU APPLY DEI (DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION) IN YOUR WORK AND/OR PERSONAL LIFE?
One of the great parts of my current role with Get the Lead Out, an education and outreach program with the goal of restoring MN’s Common Loon population through reducing the use of lead fishing tackle (Let’s talk loons and lead, folks!), is our focus on groups that are underrepresented or new to angling. We partner with various organizations to introduce fishing along with environmental stewardship to folks who are new to the sport. Earlier this year I was able to work with a group of English language learners for an ice fishing outing. For several of them it was their first winter in Minnesota, first time experiencing snow, and definitely the first time walking on a frozen lake! Part of my day job and personal passion is intentionally finding ways to remove barriers and opens doors to new experiences and connections to the people we share the world with.

HOW WOULD YOU WORK TOWARDS INCREASED INCLUSION AS A BOARD MEMBER?
It is not lost on me that if you search ‘craft beer fan’ on the internet, you’d likely see a photo of me and a bunch of other straight white guys with beards wearing flannel. I feel like Fair State and a handful of other local breweries are doing a lot of great things to change that. Three things I would look at as a member of the Board in regards to inclusion are:
1. Working with current staff to ensure they have a voice and are included in the decisions being made at Fair State.
2. Review opportunities for Fair State to find and attract new employees as it continues to grow. Attending job fairs for women, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ to connect with folks interested in working in the craft beer industry.
3. Collaborate with other local breweries to host trainings and info sessions about the craft beer industry and jobs specifically for folks that are underrepresented in the industry. It could create a network of potential applicants for openings not only at Fair State, but at the other breweries as well.

ANYTHING ELSE?
This past fall, I decided to make a pretty major career change after having spent the past 10 years in the financial industry. Long story short, I made the decision to pursue a career in the environmental field and am currently serving as a member of the Minnesota GreenCorps (part of the federal AmeriCorps program). My service is with Get the Lead Out, The work more closely matches who I am as a person and I am more fulfilled overall because of it even though it meant taking a step back from the traditional professional trajectory of our society.

I share all that because I feel it is a real life example of how I make decisions and why I make them. It is important to consider more than just money when it comes to the choices we make and the paths we follow. Fair State seems to embody a similar thought process. It isn’t simply a business focused on increasing profits. It’s a business focused on building a community for all to enjoy that just so happens to produce incredible beverages. If I were to be elected as a member of the Board, that’s how I would view any decisions I make.

CONNOR HARRELD (HE/HIM)

CURRENT OCCUPATION
Project Manager

WHY WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN FAIR STATE’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS?
I’m passionate about the beer community, and Fair State exemplifies everything that gets me excited about craft beer – creating a place where everyone is welcome, making amazing beer, and being involved in the community. It’s an exciting time for breweries in Minnesota and I think Fair State is in a great position to grow as a leader in the continued success of craft beer (and now cannabis) in MN and beyond.

Membership and Engagement – Beer brings people together. Fair State makes really, really good beer. I think a great way to showcase the amazing variety of beers is through fun, interactive events that showcase different styles. There’s a new beer every week – I think it would be awesome to have brewers, taproom staff, anyone with knowledge of the beer talk about what went into making it, the flavor profile, history of the beer (e.g., what’s Kölsch and why is Köld served in those cool cylindrical glasses) to give members more of a view into what goes on “behind the beer” and get to know the greater Fair State family a little better.

EXPERIENCE WITH COOPERATES AND/OR BOARD SERVICE
No prior experience with cooperatives or board service

INVOLVEMENT WITH BEER, ALCOHOL, SERVICE, AND/OR CANNABIS INDUSTRIES
In 2015 I was a co-founder of the Northern Ale Guide, a Minnesota brewery passport. I was involved in creating the business plan, design of the passport, marketing, distribution, and growing the guide to include 35+ member breweries. I was a part of that team for 2 years, and have recently started looking for ways to become more involved in the beer community again.

EXPERIENCE WITH ORGANIZATIONAL LONG-TERM PLANNING
I started my career as a grocery manager at a large retailer, and got a lot of experience leading a diverse team, putting together a strategy to grow sales and profitability while building a great culture. In my current job as a project manager, I always have a vision of where I want a project/product to be, and have learned to connect and motivate others to see that vision and work towards a common goal. I’ve found that building a solid foundation of trust is key to getting the collaboration needed to plan and execute long term.

HOW DO YOU APPLY DEI (DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION) IN YOUR WORK AND/OR PERSONAL LIFE?
I’m a cis, straight, white male so I focus on showing up as an ally. At work and personally I try to educate myself, educate others, and support groups impacted by social issues. I’ve received training through work, and had impactful conversations with friends and family that have helped me grow and continue to learn. And while education/training is a good starting point, I focus on how to put things into action to have lasting change – whether it’s getting involved with DEI strategy at work, attending events in the community, or donating to organizations that focus on DEI advocacy and outreach.

HOW WOULD YOU WORK TOWARDS INCREASED INCLUSION AS A BOARD MEMBER?
I think there’s an opportunity to work with DEI experts in the community to work towards lasting change. There are a lot of great organizations that Fair State could collaborate with, such as Brewing Change Collaborative, that could give additional insight into how we can move forward. I would make it a goal to identify and build relationships with these organizations that can be mutually beneficial.

ANYTHING ELSE?
I love telling people about how much I love Fair State. The variety of awesome beer, the community, everything about it. I hope that this can be a way for me to share my passion with others and help Fair State continue to be a leader in the beer community.

TIGE HUTCHESON (HE/HIM)

CURRENT OCCUPATION
Sales & Service Manager for the Minnesota Lynx

WHY WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN FAIR STATE’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS?
I work with a lot of local nonprofits outside of my regular day job and would love to do one that’s a little more fun. I love Fair State’s model, space, and would love to learn more in a leadership role.

Financial Health and Sustainable Growth both–not going to be a popular answer but we can get more out of current members. I’ve been a Fair State member for 5-6 years and haven’t donated or spent as much as I do some of my other causes. I will get better on a personal level moving forward (I promise :)), but generating more causes, drives, and asks, even if not required but just a “please consider giving at a meaningful level” would be a good idea. Our most passionate supporters have already signed up, so let’s not stop asking them.

EXPERIENCE WITH COOPERATES AND/OR BOARD SERVICE
I’m currently on the Young Professionals Board for both the Minnesota Zoo and Gilda’s Clubhouse, with leadership roles in both.

INVOLVEMENT WITH BEER, ALCOHOL, SERVICE, AND/OR CANNABIS INDUSTRIES
I work with a number of companies in those industries at my day job with the Lynx–I also have experience as a barista and customer.

EXPERIENCE WITH ORGANIZATIONAL LONG-TERM PLANNING
I am currently partially responsible in short-term and long-term revenue planning with the Lynx and also helping promote the long-term capital campaign for the Minnesota Zoo’s tree top trail.

HOW DO YOU APPLY DEI (DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION) IN YOUR WORK AND/OR PERSONAL LIFE?
The biggest example is trying to stay educated and hear all stories. Nobody can speak for everyone so there’s value in every story. I try very much to see value and opportunity in each individual background and focus on what we have in common vs. what we don’t. And most important, I think we connect through vulnerability.

HOW WOULD YOU WORK TOWARDS INCREASED INCLUSION AS A BOARD MEMBER?
Make an effort to expose Fair State’s beer to communities it’s not currently involved in, try to more intentionally create a more welcoming and safe space for marginalized communities, and my being more intentional about service projects and fundraising dollars.

ANYTHING ELSE?
I am also involved in recreational volleyball and curling leagues and have connections with Utepils Brewing, Heavy Rotation Brewing, and Brother Justus. Really appreciate your consideration, no matter how this turns out. I pride myself on optimism, energy, and passion, and promise to bring that with me to Fair State.

KYLE KNUTSON (HE/HIM)

CURRENT OCCUPATION
Director of Global Marketing and Product Management at Emerson Electric

WHY WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN FAIR STATE’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS?
I’m passionate about beer and the good that’s come from the culture of breweries across Minnesota. Breweries bring a sense of pride to our community, their taprooms create an inviting space for anyone to go, and they have a large influence on the culture in the community through art, music, games, and non-profit community engagement. I believe Fair State does an exceptional job at this and our beer is top notch. I would be honored to be selected to Fair State’s Board of Directors to help Fair State continue to be a force for good in the area.

Sustainable Growth:
I cannot claim I know the inner workings of Fair State’s business plans to be able to provide the well-educated answer I’d prefer to offer. However, I can speak to my perception our cooperative and provide a lens through my experience driving focused growth in the products I manage. Fair State has done an exceptional job renewing market interest through the rotation of high-volume seasonable beers. Combined with great staples like our hazy IPAs and the Pils, this has created a strong foundation of solid products to build from.

The most recent launch of Chill State offers a more unique opportunity to not just grow, but establish Fair State’s place in the THC beverage market as other breweries and companies aim for this market as well. In this case, understanding this new market and being focused in where we sell it will drive the success of the products. There is certainly an overlap in the market with beer, but making this drink approachable and at the right price point will be important. We’ll need to ask ourselves questions like: Who is our target market for this? Are there others too hesitant to try, and if so, why? Where does one drink a THC infused drink vs beer? Our we positioning our products in those places too? Is there a part of the market other drink manufacturers are not targeting?

The way we promote and position this product needs to be unique enough to establish something different from the broader market. If we do this successfully, it won’t remain a niche market that is slowly overrun by other companies. Instead, we can create a less saturated market providing consistent, sustainable growth to help drive a strong P&L with a healthy cash flow.

EXPERIENCE WITH COOPERATES AND/OR BOARD SERVICE
My role makes me the voting board member for an $XXXM business where myself and our leadership staff provide strategic planning and vision for our group, as well as a steering committee to help guide project teams as they progress from ideas to execution. I have also been on the other side of the puzzle in hosting Emerson’s board of directors on multiple occasions for the purpose of educating and gaining insight. These experiences have given me an appreciation and understanding of the importance of a board member to help steer a company in the appropriate direction. This ensures clear company goals and strategic direction, financial stability, and accountability for the organization.

INVOLVEMENT WITH BEER, ALCOHOL, SERVICE, AND/OR CANNABIS INDUSTRIES
I work in the automation industry and have spent half of my career exclusively designing products for the beverage industry, as well as helping our customers better automate their facilities for higher throughput and batch repeatability. In my current role, I am responsible more specifically for Flow Meters which measure the flowrates of liquids and the supporting utilities of beverage production, among other applications. This experience has given me a strong understanding of the importance of the financial health of breweries, ensuring the equipment is well leveraged and revenue per barrel remains at or above desired metrics. My experience within my own organization has helped to give me additional understanding of the importance of driving the right metrics in the factory and maintaining a healthy P&L and strong cash flow.

EXPERIENCE WITH ORGANIZATIONAL LONG-TERM PLANNING
I spent 2 years in a role similar to a chief of staff for our group president. In this role, my sole purpose was to manage the strategic planning and executive management process for our instrumentation devices business. The most recent two years, I have led the strategic planning process for the specific products I now manage. These experience have given me significant insight in the importance of not just building a long-term strategic plan that’s well informed from a broad stakeholder base, but also the importance of effectively communicating the plan, getting buy-in from the organization, and creating a sense of pride and accountability in execution of the plan. A well communicated plan and a well-organized plan help drive results and builds a good guiding light for the entire organization to work towards.

HOW DO YOU APPLY DEI (DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION) IN YOUR WORK AND/OR PERSONAL LIFE?
There are many aspects of my role where DEI is not just applied, but a leading part of my role. One of my most proud examples of this is our hiring practices to ensure we build an inclusive organization. We’ve set a strong stance in my group to ensure any role we hire for has a 50% diverse slate of candidates and interviewers. The slate of candidates is a fairly simple one for people to understand. However, just as important has been our focus on a diverse group of interviewers. For one, showing candidates a diverse group of interviewers help them see themselves in the company and gives them a sense of inclusion right away. And two, this ensures any conscious or unconscious biases due to race or gender are accounted for. This practice has allowed us to equitably provide opportunities to a broader group of people and has resulted in hiring better and more diverse candidates than we otherwise would have.

HOW WOULD YOU WORK TOWARDS INCREASED INCLUSION AS A BOARD MEMBER?
The first way would be to recommend a similar hiring practice as I mention above. Another way would be through DEI moments. Continuous communication and education is an important part of inclusion. Before board meetings or other internal meetings/events, I would encourage the practice of simple DEI moments. These can be anything from simple education on terms, highlighting important events in the news, giving a spotlight to employees who have done good through their inclusive leadership or actions, or bringing up thought provoking topics that insight healthy discussion about inclusion. This practice creates a well-educated workforce, but also creates a culture of people consistently thinking about how to work towards increased inclusion and the psychological safety to talk about these topics openly and honestly.

ANYTHING ELSE?
I am a new father to a now 4 month old daughter, Jovie, and husband to my amazing wife, Lauren. Jovie was able to have her first experience at the Fair State tap room this March and found it to be a perfectly sleepy environment while her parents enjoyed some beer. My favorite beer at Fair State is the Pils, but my favorite type of beer in the work is a well made Kölsh. The recent launch of Köld may be giving my love for the Pils a run for its money.

I have spent over a decade in the automation industry helping processing plants run more reliably, while reducing costs and improving plant uptime. My role as a leader through the covid pandemic has taught me the importance of being a selfless leader and caring for employees first and foremost. It’s also taught me the importance of a healthy cash flow to ensure resilience as a business tries to grow through an uncertain market. I believe I can provide a broad leadership perspective to help steer our cooperative over the next three years as we look to sustainably grow with a healthy P&L, all while ensuring our employees, members, and the community feel welcome, included, and are better off because of the good work Fair State does.

MATT MACINNES (HE/HIM)

CURRENT OCCUPATION
Financial Analyst

WHY WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN FAIR STATE’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS?
I’ve been a big fan of Fair State since they opened and believe the Coop model, along with community outreach and union membership, is a powerful example to the rest of the brewing industry. It would be an honor to lend my experience and skills to this endeavor.

Sustainable growth related to marketing. I know that Fair State makes some of the best beer in the state but it’s tough standing out in the crowded market. I feel that emphasizing Fair State’s union-owned coop model in its marketing would be a differentiator in the market. Let people know that they’re not just buying great beer, they’re also supporting the company’s values of fair labor and a strong community.

EXPERIENCE WITH COOPERATES AND/OR BOARD SERVICE
I served on the board of my previous condo association for a few years, overseeing major renovation projects and finances. In addition we dealt with everything from owner complaints to negotiations with the commercial association sharing our building to quality of life issues.

INVOLVEMENT WITH BEER, ALCOHOL, SERVICE, AND/OR CANNABIS INDUSTRIES
I just wrapped up a part time job as head brewer at Yoerg Brewing where I’ve been for the past four years brewing German-style lagers and ales. I handled the entire process, from designing recipes, ordering ingredients, brewing, cellaring, cleaning and packaging the beer. In addition, I’m a graduate of Dakota County Technical College’s brewing technical program. Last but not least, I’ve been a home brewer for over 10 years.

EXPERIENCE WITH ORGANIZATIONAL LONG-TERM PLANNING
As my main day job I’m a financial analyst for Minnesota State (the state college and university system) and have been in that role for 11 years. Long-term planning has been a central part of my work. Working with CFO’s across the state, I’ve helped develop and present budget planning solutions to the Vice Chancellor and Board of Trustees, as well as developing budget planning and analysis tools to help guide decision making, and creating the budget and bonding proposals sent to the state legislature. Long-term planning and sustainability is always on my mind.

HOW DO YOU APPLY DEI (DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION) IN YOUR WORK AND/OR PERSONAL LIFE?
DEI is infused in the work I do for Minnesota State. I strive to be aware of my own biases and think of others’ perspectives in everything I do. In my daily activities this includes things like ensuring the public documents I post are accessibility reader-friendly, approaching negotiations with union representatives with careful listening and respect for different perspectives and opinions, and using my voice and privilege to support and work for those who don’t have one. I am a staunch ally for the LGBTQ community and lend my help and support to my family and friends.

HOW WOULD YOU WORK TOWARDS INCREASED INCLUSION AS A BOARD MEMBER?
I’d start with mixing up teams and avoiding groupthink. Surveying or looking to other voices not represented at the table would also be key. Making sure that there are opportunities for diverse voices to be heard and to make an impact. Figuring out a way to measure and keep the board accountable.

ANYTHING ELSE?
I’m team oriented and a good listener. I can think both creatively and analytically. I believe my diverse set of skills and perspective would be an asset to Fair State and its members and I look forward to this opportunity to serve the community.

WHY WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN FAIR STATE’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS?
I would like to join the Board of Directors for another term to continue important work around diversity, equity, and inclusion. I have earned valuable experience over my last 4 years of service.

I think our ability to tangible impact the community was hampered during the pandemic, so I’d like to leverage the Membership Engagement Committee to get members more active in serving the community.

EXPERIENCE WITH COOPERATES AND/OR BOARD SERVICE
I was elected to a 1-year term to the FSBC board in 2019 and reelected in 2020. I have served most recently as the vice chair, and previously I was the records chair.

My previous board service is with North Star Roller Derby’s (NSRD’s) Board of Governors.

INVOLVEMENT WITH BEER, ALCOHOL, SERVICE, AND/OR CANNABIS INDUSTRIES
I worked as a server in a bar/restaurant from 2005-2008.

EXPERIENCE WITH ORGANIZATIONAL LONG-TERM PLANNING
Most of my experience with organizational long-term planning has been with the FSBC and NSRD boards.

HOW DO YOU APPLY DEI (DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION) IN YOUR WORK AND/OR PERSONAL LIFE?
I strive to employ techniques I learned in “How to be an Anti-Racist” (Ibram X. Kendi) and “White Fragility” (Robin DiAngelo) in my job, personal life, and parenting.

HOW WOULD YOU WORK TOWARDS INCREASED INCLUSION AS A BOARD MEMBER?
I work towards increased inclusion by ensuring everyone’s voices are heard, and by holding everyone accountable to the same standard.

ANYTHING ELSE?
I have really enjoyed my last 4 years of service and think I still have some work I’d like to see through before the end of my time with the FSBC Board.

IAN RINGGENBERG (HE/HIM)

CURRENT OCCUPATION
Bureaucrat (Associate Director of an educational program at University of Minnesota)

WHY WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN FAIR STATE’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS?
I’m a Fair State Cooperative member, enthusiast and neighbor. I have been a regular presence in the taproom for the past five years since I moved to a house within a half mile of the taproom, and the brewery, beer, and the faces within are a part of my neighborhood and community. FSBC, as a cooperative and unionized brewery, has a unique opportunity to set the industry standard as a progressive force in its community that supports and empowers beverage employment as a sustainable career — not a hobbyist gig. As Fair State grows over the coming years, and especially with the expansion of THC beverages, it’s important that the Board of Directors keep its operations grounded in its community responsibilities and values. I hope to bring my perspective, labor, and connections through the community to assist in this process.

Impact on the Community: The Central Avenue/Lowry intersection is home to a number of great restaurants, but folks who travel in from outside the neighborhood are likely to frequent the more established brands with a web presence and broad reputation. We could reach out to smaller/newer restaurants in the Ecuadorian community (Sabor Cuencano or Sabor Latino) or East African community (Hodan Cuisine) in the area to make sure their menus are available in the taproom, discuss delivery options, or even consider specific delivery days like what previously existed with Dipped and Debris.

EXPERIENCE WITH COOPERATES AND/OR BOARD SERVICE
I have not served on the board of a cooperative previously. I served on the steering committee of Twin Cities Democratic Socialists of America, which included some similar functions: member outreach, budgeting and purchase approval, fundraising, relations with other organizations, etc. I also served as chair of the Staff Senate at the University of Minnesota, including running meetings for the elected representatives of a 7000+ staff unit.

INVOLVEMENT WITH BEER, ALCOHOL, SERVICE, AND/OR CANNABIS INDUSTRIES
I have not worked in the beer, alcohol, service, or cannabis industry in the past. I have been a big fan of their work though. I do have some experience homebrewing, and a passable knowledge of the brewing process and beer styles.

EXPERIENCE WITH ORGANIZATIONAL LONG-TERM PLANNING
I have been a part of visioning and committee retreats through my professional work and political involvements. We have set budgets, considered funding for staff positions and programming, and set goals. I was recently part of the team that developed a DEI strategic plan that included short, medium and long term goals to increase diversity and inclusion.

HOW DO YOU APPLY DEI (DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION) IN YOUR WORK AND/OR PERSONAL LIFE?
As a worker in Higher Education, I’ve had exposure to a great deal of trainings around DEI — from microaggressions and implicit bias, to equitable hiring practices and supervision, to intercultural communication. My experiences through TCDSA have also helped me to learn how to interact with communities other than my own with humility and care.

My own view and approach to DEI is that we must view social justice as a direct challenge to power, not a process of personal enlightenment. Racism, ableism, and sexism, while partially perpetuated through ignorance, are bound up in an economic and political system that profits off of the division of people and the empowerment of one at the expense of the other. When we seek to remediate this division, we must directly assault the systems that benefit off of it.

HOW WOULD YOU WORK TOWARDS INCREASED INCLUSION AS A BOARD MEMBER?
I hope to be an approachable ear for members and neighbors. I hope that my own proximity to the Taproom can help facilitate conversations between FSBC and the community most impacted by the Taproom, its staff and events and guests. I hope we can continue to foster an organization that empowers its workers to create spaces that are safe for all of our guests. As a brewery (even a cooperative, unionized, progressive one) we have to grapple with a culture that’s associated with white masculinity, and the negative impact that alcohol abuse has had on many lives. I think we need to start from that honest place of understanding and work to build on the positive experiences that so many of us have with the good beer and comradery we find at Fair State.

ANYTHING ELSE?
My favorite FS beers are “Fair State Total Landscaping” and “Cooperator”. Sweet, rich, dark beers are coming back in a big way folks!

BENJAMIN WERNER (HE/HIM)

CURRENT OCCUPATION
Dental hygienist/ Public health blogger and student

WHY WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN FAIR STATE’S BOARD OF DIRECTORS?
I am currently working on a Master’s degree in Public Health, where my main focus is equity, inclusion, and community, and I feel all of that plays an amazingly important role in how people connect. I also understand how advocacy plays a role in the world around us and how it can play a role in our co-op.

With a focus on impact on the community, I would love to bring forward ways in which we connect with many different charities or organizations that make an impact in our community, and give those organizations a spotlight to do what they do best and work together to do charitable work and have the members be a part of the advocacy and also feel represented not only within themselves but also the community, and with our members.

EXPERIENCE WITH COOPERATES AND/OR BOARD SERVICE
I have no previous experience, but have a lot of working knowledge of how to represent a brand and offer support anyway I can

INVOLVEMENT WITH BEER, ALCOHOL, SERVICE, AND/OR CANNABIS INDUSTRIES
I used to sell beer for Saint Paul Brewing, and I am also an avid homebrewer making several batches month. Beside that I have worked in health care for about 8 years in one way or another.

EXPERIENCE WITH ORGANIZATIONAL LONG-TERM PLANNING
As a dental hygienist, I understand how to grow a business that keeps people coming back, I’m no stranger to collaboration and integration of new policies and how to address bigger issues.

HOW DO YOU APPLY DEI (DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION) IN YOUR WORK AND/OR PERSONAL LIFE?
Again, I have a background in education with public health, I eat, sleep, and breathe diversity, equity, and inclusion, and it’s a pinnacle of how I embody my life, from advocacy of underserved communities, to bigger pictures of universal healthcare. I also run a blog in which I Interview different organizations and people who I feel make a difference in our community and highlight ways that people can volunteer, donate, or support that organization. Funny enough Fair State is on my list to interview, however the emails I’ve sent seem to not be going through.

HOW WOULD YOU WORK TOWARDS INCREASED INCLUSION AS A BOARD MEMBER?
I think advocacy shines a light in a way that people can not only comprehend but also get behind and I feel like advocating for various different ideas not only in the beer industry but the world around us will go far.

ANYTHING ELSE?
This is my first time applying, and I’ve been looking forward to at the very least applying for this position since before I was officially a member. I love being a part of this organization, and although I am young, I have a good heart, and an education to back that up. I look forward to hearing from you, and I truly thank you for your time.
