Fair State Brewing Cooperative is seeking a full-time (40 hours / week) Packaging Technician to join our production staff in St. Paul, MN. We are growing quickly and need to add staff to help meet demand.

A little about us: Fair State is one of a very few cooperatively-owned breweries in the US. We began operations at our brewery/taproom in Northeast Minneapolis in August of 2014, and recently expanded into a 40,000 sq. ft. production brewery in St. Paul, MN. We focus on traditional lager beer, sour beer (ranging from kettle sours to 100% barrel-fermented mixed culture beers), and hoppy beers. We are positioned to grow substantially over the next few years, and as such this position may continue to grow and evolve with the brewery.

Currently we operate a 7.5bbl brewhouse at the taproom location, and a 4-vessel 30bbl brewhouse at the St. Paul location, where we also package our beer in cans and bottles.

A little about you: we’re looking for a dedicated, hardworking, and knowledgeable person to help us stay on track. The ideal candidate would have some experience in the beer industry, packaging experience preferably, or in warehousing/manufacturing generally, and be willing to learn.

This position will report to the Head Brewer and the Packaging/Warehouse manager.

Responsibilities

  • Cleaning and filling kegs
  • Operating the canning line, weighing and sorting cans, casing and palletizing finished product
  • Operating the bottling line, labeling, casing, and palletizing finished product
  • Collecting data and maintaining records related to packaging
  • Counting inventory of packaging materials and finished product
  • Performing CIP of canning, bottling, and kegging equipment and tanks
  • Performing general cleaning and sanitation
  • Operating forklifts and pallet jacks
  • Contributing to a safe working environment by following safety procedures
  • Representing Fair State at events, as necessary
  • All the squeegee and mop work that you can handle
  • Pick and stage orders for shipment ranging in size from several cases to multiple pallets
  • Load, unload, and drive dock-height box truck to transfer beer and supplies within the greater Minneapolis-Saint Paul metro area
  • Receive and inventory supplies and raw materials from vendors and clients
  • Identify, communicate with Finance and Sales staff about, and help resolve discrepancies in purchasing, shipping, and customer ordering documentation
  • Record inventory movements and perform inventory counts, including identifying, communicating about, and resolving variances
  • Maintain clean, neat, well-labeled, and safe warehouse and cold room spaces to support efficient production and sales operations
  • Perform maintenance on production equipment, kegs, and vehicles as directed
  • Participate in beer sensory panels, production team planning, and team development of standards and procedures

 

Desired skills and experience

  • Previous brewery industry or other packaging experience strongly preferred
  • Previous experience in a lean manufacturing environment preferred
  • Forklift operator certification preferred

Requirements

  • Able to stand for prolonged periods
  • Able to stoop, crawl, twist, turn, lift, kneel, climb ladders and stairs
  • Able to manipulate valves and clamps
  • Able to read and follow written English instructions
  • Able to regularly lift/carry heavy objects (55 lbs.) repeatedly and safely
  • Able to occasionally move heavy objects (160 lbs.)
  • Able to comply with safe chemical handling procedures, including personal protection equipment such as gloves and goggles
  • Able to safely work on ladders and elevated platforms and in confined spaces
  • Able to safely operate vehicles and material handling equipment (e.g., vans, trucks, hand trucks, scissor lifts)
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to pass insurance driving record review for operating Company-owned vehicles on public roads

This is a full-time hourly position; compensation is dependent on experience. As a full-time employee, this role will also be eligible for:

Fair State Brewing Cooperative is seeking two part-time (20 hours / week) Beertenders to join our taproom staff in Minneapolis, MN. Fair State is the third cooperatively-owned brewery in the US. We began operations at our brewery/taproom in Northeast Minneapolis in August of 2014. We were fortunate enough to be named one of RateBeer’s 10 best new brewers in the world for 2015, and in 2017 we expanded into a 40,000 sq. ft. production brewery in St. Paul, MN. We focus on traditional German-style beers (especially lager beer), sour beer (ranging from kettle sours to 100% barrel-fermented mixed culture beers), and hoppy beers. We are positioned to grow substantially over the next few years, and as such this position may continue to grow and evolve with the business.

Currently we operate a taproom and beer garden in Northeast Minneapolis, which is open seven days a week, and where we periodically host large festivals and events.

We’re looking for an enthusiastic, hardworking, and knowledgeable person to serve our loyal guests and put our best foot forward to newcomers. The ideal candidate will have some experience in the beer industry, or in bar operations, and be willing to learn a lot about beer.

This position will report to the Taproom Manager and the Taproom Assistant Manager, and will be supervised by Taproom Shift Leads during service.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work regular shifts in our taproom
  • Clean and prepare the taproom for service
  • Stock bottled beer in taproom cooler, change kegs in service cooler, and stock merchandise
  • Greet guests and anticipate and respond to their needs
  • Record transactions using our point-of-sale system
  • Maintain responsibility for cash drawers, inventory, and recordkeeping while on shift
  • Perform periodic inventory counts and participate in investigating / resolving inventory accuracy issues
  • Handle multiple tasks at one time efficiently and with an upbeat, friendly attitude
  • Be a team player and able to interact with all levels within the organization
  • Interact with and handle intoxicated guests in a positive and safety minded manner
  • Work independently and as a motivated team player
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor
  • Enforce all applicable alcohol laws and rules, including ensuring that beer is only served to those over 21 years of age, and that it is served responsibly

Qualifications

  • Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application
  • Previous cash handling experience required
  • Evening, holiday, and weekend availability required
  • Opening, running, closing shift availability required
  • Working knowledge of high volume operations and safe, responsible alcohol service required
  • Cicerone Certified Beer Server preferred
  • Previous professional service industry and/or hospitality experience preferred
  • Knowledge of craft beer and the brewing process preferred
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Fair State  products and cooperative ownership model preferred

Physical Demands

  • Able to regularly twist, turn, kneel, climb, stoop, bend, crawl, lift and carry supplies and equipment weighing up to 55 pounds using appropriate techniques and tools
  • Able to maneuver packages of any weight above 75 pounds with appropriate equipment and/or assistance
  • Abe to move 165-pounds, using appropriate techniques and tools

 

Work Environment

  • Able to work in a factory/production environment which may be loud, slick, humid, cold, and hot
  • Able to work in a service environment which may be loud, busy, fast-paced, erratic, environment that can include odors and dogs
  • Able to work in indoor and outdoor environments with moderate noise and occasionally slippery floors

 

Compensation and Benefits

This is a part-time hourly position that will be paid at a rate of $9.86 / hr for front-of-house work (tipped) and $13.28 / hr for back-of-house work (not tipped). As a part-time position, it will be eligible for the following benefits:

Fair State Brewing Cooperative is seeking several individuals to join our Street Team, which introduces our beer to new consumers at liquor store tastings and festivals. We are growing quickly and are excited to add staff to help meet the demand for our beer.

A little about us: Fair State is one of very few cooperatively-owned breweries in the US. We began operations at our brewery/taproom in August of 2014. We were fortunate enough to be named one of RateBeer’s 10 best new brewers in the world for 2015 and recently expanded into a 40,000 sq. ft. production brewery in St. Paul, MN. We focus on traditional German-style beers (especially lager beer), sour beer (ranging from kettle sours to 100% barrel-fermented mixed culture beers), and hoppy beers. Our new production facility has enabled us to supply an expanded assortment of products to a larger number of off-premise accounts.

A little about you: we’re looking for friendly, knowledgeable, and responsible individuals to help us share our beer with new consumers. The ideal candidate would have some experience in the service roles, enjoy talking with and educating others, and be able to work independently.

Responsibilities

The Street Team pours samples of our beer at liquor store tastings and festivals. Liquor store tastings are typically from either 4 pm – 7 pm or 4 pm – 6 pm on weeknights, often on Thursdays and Fridays, and occasionally on Saturdays. Festivals are typically on weekend afternoons. Street Team members will be notified of upcoming events and asked to respond with their availability on a rolling basis.

For each event, Street Team members will be responsible for:

  • Picking up and returning supplies to our taproom or production brewery (e.g., tablecloths, tasting notes, ice tubs, beer)
  • Setting up and breaking down a display table
  • Pouring samples, engaging consumers in conversation, and educating them about our beers and our cooperative business model

Requirements / Qualifications

  • General knowledge of beer styles
  • Experience in customer service, sales, or teaching roles is a plus
  • Willingness to work weekday afternoons and evenings, as well as weekend afternoons
  • Ability to safely lift and move 30 lbs.
  • Ability to follow training on safe and legal service of alcohol

Compensation and Benefits

This is a part-time hourly position with irregular hours. For each event, Street Team members will be paid for the full scheduled length of the event plus 30 minutes for setup and breakdown. Any time worked in excess of that amount will be paid at $10 / hr. Street Team members will also receive a beer allotment, typically (2) 4-packs, for each event worked.
